The toolkit

PRODUCER
RESOURCESEverything you need to make the beat

The software, sounds and platforms that actually get used — heavy on the free end, because a tight workflow beats an expensive one. Start with a DAW, grab a synth, and go.

Start here

From empty project to released track

If you're starting out, work through these five stages in order — everything below is grouped the same way.

Pick a DAW

One is enough, and free is fine. Learn its shortcuts before you buy anything else — the DAW is the instrument.

Get sounds in

A synth, a drum library and a sampler cover almost every genre. Add packs only when you hit a real gap.

Arrange

Finish rough ideas rather than perfecting loops. A finished eight-bar sketch teaches more than a perfect two-bar one.

Mix & master

Gain-stage, reference against tracks you like, and check loudness before export — not after.

Release & sell

Distribute to streaming, register your publishing so you get paid, and list beats where artists actually shop.

Step 1

DAWs

Where the track actually gets built. Every one of these will take you to a finished, released record.

Step 2

Free plugins worth installing

These stand up next to paid gear. Install these before you spend anything.

Step 2

Samples & sounds

Check the licence before you release — especially on anything free or user-uploaded.

Step 4

Mixing & mastering

Metering beats guessing. Streaming platforms normalise to around −14 LUFS, so louder isn't automatically better.

Keep sharpening

Learn the craft

Theory, sound design and mixing — all free unless marked otherwise.

Step 5

Release & get paid

Distribution puts the track on streaming. Publishing registration is what actually collects the other half of your money — do both.

Step 5

Sell your beats

Where artists actually go looking for production. Tag your key and BPM properly — that's how you get found.
